The Department of Theatre is pleased to offer several annual scholarships to eligible Theatre majors who have demonstrated dedication to their academic studies and artistic practice here at UMBC:
- The Theatre Department Scholarship
- The Dr. Alice McDonnell Robinson Memorial Scholarship
- The Darrel W. and Dorothy J. Anderson Endowed Scholarship
- The William T. Brown Shakespeare on Wheels Research Award
Theatre students majoring in all areas of theatre can apply for departmental merit scholarships, for special research opportunities, and summer study. Scholarship applications occur each Spring, with awards intended for use the following summer and/or academic year. Students are encouraged to apply for any and all scholarships for which they qualify. You will need to be logged into your myUMBC account to apply for the scholarships.
*Please note that the GPA requirement for all scholarships has been changed from 3.0 to 2.75 for the 2024 – 2025 academic year.
Theatre Department Scholarship
Department of Theatre Scholarships are awarded to multiple theatre students each year on the basis of academic accomplishment and service to the department. This merit-based scholarship is funded by ticket sales from UMBC Theatre productions. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $2,500 and are applied directly to tuition. The number of awards and individual award amounts will depend upon the strength of the application and available funding. Students must have spent a minimum of two semesters of study as a theatre major at UMBC to apply for this scholarship. (*Seniors with following year enrollment are also eligible to apply.) Scholarships can be awarded to eligible applicants/students a maximum of two times.

Dr. Alice McDonnell Robinson Memorial Scholarship
This legacy scholarship was established by former Theatre Professor Alice M. Robinson to support students majoring in Theatre each year. Legacy scholarships are awarded annually and award amounts fluctuate yearly depending on funding. Scholarships can be awarded to eligible applicants/students a maximum of two times.

Darrel W. and Dorothy J. Anderson Endowed Scholarship
This endowed fund was established by Darrel W. and Dorothy J. Anderson in honor of their families. This scholarship is dedicated to providing funds to support a Theatre major based on need. One endowed scholarship is awarded annually and award amounts fluctuate yearly depending on funding. Scholarships can be awarded to eligible applicants/students a maximum of two times.

William T. Brown Shakespeare on Wheels Research Award
The William T. Brown Shakespeare on Wheels Research Award provides theatre majors with an opportunity to receive financial support to attend a workshop, a master class, or a conference that is linked to an area of study in the theatre department at UMBC. Multiple research awards can be provided each year and award amounts fluctuate depending upon the strength of the application and available funding.
Theatre majors of any discipline may apply. Applicants must be sophomores or juniors or, if a transfer, must have spent a minimum of two semesters of study as a theatre major at UMBC. (*Seniors with following year enrollment are also eligible to apply.)

Undergraduate Research Awards
Undergraduate Research Awards (URAs) provide up to $1,500 in support for recipients to work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. A multidisciplinary faculty review committee chooses recipients on a competitive basis, and all fields of study are eligible to apply.
