How to Apply

All prospective theatre students offered admission to the university enter directly through the BA Theatre program pursuing either a concentration in Theatre Studies or a concentration in Design and Production. No audition or portfolio review is required to enter our BA program unless applying for scholarships, such as the Linehan Artist Scholar Program. Upon successful completion of the first semester of study, interested Theatre Studies students may pursue selective admission to the BFA in Acting – a more intensive performance program.

Freshmen and transfers who successfully auditioned for early acceptance into the BFA Acting program will enter the university as BFA Acting students. Learn more about early/accelerated entry into the BFA program here.

Students interested in learning more about these options are encouraged to contact the department. The best way to learn about our program is to come to campus, visit classes and see our theatre productions. We are happy to welcome you into any class with advance notice. To arrange a visit or an appointment to meet with one of our faculty, contact the Theatre Department at 410-455-2917 or theatre@umbc.edu.

Students wishing to apply for Linehan Artist Scholarships and/or Fine Arts Awards are required to audition or present a portfolio. During the Audition and Interview Day, the theatre faculty will assess each candidate’s artistic merit. The day includes tours of our state-of-the-art Performing Arts and Humanities Building, and plenty of interaction with our students and faculty. For instructions on how to prepare and schedule your Audition or Portfolio Interview, please read Scholarship Audition & Portfolio Review Requirements.

For information about theatre merit scholarships, such as the Fine Arts Award or the Linehan Artist Scholar Program, and smaller scholarships for majors, see Scholarships.
