Theatre Education Track

Students in Stage Management Class.

About Our Theatre, BA: Theatre Education Track

UMBC Department of Theatre offers a four-year pathway for students seeking Certification in Secondary Theatre Education.

The Theatre Education Track aligns to the Secondary School Teacher Certification for the State of Maryland. Whether or not a student intends to pursue certification, this track will also prepare a theatre-maker for professional teaching opportunities within the industry.

Students will not be required to complete the Secondary Education Certification to finish their degree. If they choose not to pursue Certification, the 9 credit hours of teaching-specific training will prepare graduates for in-demand opportunities as teaching artists, housed at nearly every professional theatre company within the US, especially here in the DMV.

The Theatre Education Track combined with Secondary Education Certification totals 120 credits, an achievable goal for four year or two year transfer study.

How to Apply

Admission to the Theatre, BA: Theatre Education Track does not require any prerequisite screening. However, talented first year students who bring prior accomplishments are encouraged to apply for the Linehan Artist Scholar Program, which requires an audition or portfolio review, and interview.

Students interested in pursuing this track are encouraged to reach out to Professor Susan McCully (mccully@umbc.edu) directly for advising.
